Almost all the available vaccine against COVID -19 are designed to induce an immune response against Receptor Binding Domain(RBD) on SARS-Cov-2 virus.
How does COVID-19 virus infect the host cell?
The RBD on COVID virus binds to ACE2 receptor of host cell, where they gain entry into host cells and infect the host.
Following vaccine injection, there will be activation of an individual’s immune response. This result in the generation of antibodies against the virus. Some of these antibodies can bind to the virus, but not necessarily block the viral infection. They are called non-neutralizing antibodies. Some of the antibodies can bind to the virus and prevent the virus from binding to the host cells, thus prevent the virus from infecting the host. They are called neutralizing antibodies(Nab). The Nab block the RBD of virus from binding to ACE2 receptor on the host cells. Therefore, the virus cannot infect the host. Measuring the level of Nab in the host will provide the assessment of the protective immunity. The higher the level of Nab, the more the host is being protected from Covid-19 virus.
The Technology
The test principle is based on measuring the inhibition of RBD/ACE2 interaction by neutralizing antibodies, which measure the level of functional neutralizing antibodies.
The cPassTM technology helps to distinguish whether a sample contains Nabs that may specifically block the interaction. In other words, this technology is able to specifically identify whether the host contains antibodies that are able to prevent the virus from infecting the host.
Who is Covid-19 Antibody test for?
The test is recommended for individuals seeking to find out if your immune system is responsive towards Covid-19 vaccination. It is to test level of antibodies present in the body as the level of antibody varies depending on individual’s immune system. Your own immune system creates the antibody after the vaccination, not the vaccine itself.
