- Prof. Dr. Edmond Ng Siah Chye
Asst. Prof. Dr. Edmond Ng and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Farahnaz presented the potentials and challenges of using exosome therapy in skin care at the 2021 Internal Medial Aesthetic Conference Exhibition (IMACE). The conference is held on November 27 and 28, 2021 at the World Trade Centre (WTC).
Both external and internal factors may lead to changes in skin characteristics and appearance. Unfortunately, many skin treatments fail to strike a good balance between medical healing and cosmetic requirements. Cell-free exosomes have attracted much attention due to their role as intercellular mediators and their potential to carry and deliver drugs, growth factors, and active compounds to the skin.
This talk focused on the application of exosomes in skin care and the potential and challenges of employing exosomes in aesthetic applications. The available evidence on the effectiveness of exosome-based therapy to repair, regenerate, and rejuvenate skin tissue was discussed. Because exosomes can move safely in extracellular fluids and act as natural delivery cargo to designated cells with great selectivity and efficiency, enhancing skin hydration, removing or reducing pigmentation, wrinkles, and volume loss are the potential applications of exosomes in skin care.
Despite major efforts in this relatively new field of research, obstacles such as creating clinical-grade exosomes in large quantities, designing different loading and isolation procedures to control the efficacy of exosome-based product delivery, identifying exosome therapeutic potential for patient selection for the right application, and the dynamics of circulation and biodistribution in the skin have hindered progress.
