Bruising is expected with any kind of injection, whether it is medical (i.e. blood test) or cosmetic.  One of the biggest concerns expressed by prospective clients is the possibility of bruising after an aesthetic procedure. Some people bruise more easily than others, whether or not your treated area will show bruising after your treatment is very individual.

It’s normal to experience swelling, redness and bruising following an aesthetic procedure. But don’t worry, there are things you can do to reduce bruising and speed up the healing process. In this article, we will discuss the steps you can take to minimize bruising and swelling post-procedure.

Bruises are the result of blood from damaged veins collecting near the skin’s surface, which can take weeks to disappear.

Apply ice or a cold compress:

Applying a cold compress to the injected area can help to constrict the blood vessels, reduce the blood from seeping out. This in turn reduces swelling and inflammation. You can use a bag of frozen peas, a cold gel pack, or even a washcloth soaked in ice water.

Avoid blood thinning medications

Certain medications and supplements, such as ibuprofen, gingko and fish oil, can increase your risk of bruising and bleeding. This is because they tend to thin the blood and increase bleeding. It’s best to avoid these for at least a week before and after your injection.

Avoid alcohol

Alcohol can act as an anticoagulant. Coagulation refers to blood cells stick together and form clumps.  Alcohol can increase your risk of bruising and swelling by interfering with coagulation process and make your platelets less sticky. So it’s best to avoid these for a few days before and after your injection.

Use arnica

Arnica is a natural remedy that can help reduce bruising and swelling. Arnica has been used for thousands of years as a topical cure for bruises thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. Researches show topical 20% arnica ointment is able to reduce bruising. You can find arnica creams and gels at most drugstores.

Keep your head elevated

Keeping your head elevated can allow the blood to drain properly and this helps reduce swelling. Try sleeping with an extra pillow or two for a few nights after your injection.

By following these tips, you can help reduce the appearance and severity of post aesthetic injection bruising and swelling. If you have any concerns, be sure to speak with your aesthetic provider.
