In both traditional and modern Asian beauty standards, a V-shaped face is often seen as very attractive. Various factors can contribute to facial roundness, including subcutaneous fat, strong masseter muscles and sagging skin. In this blog post, we will explore these factors and modern treatments that can help you achieve a more defined, V-shaped face.
1. Masseter Muscle Reduction
The masseter is one of the four main muscles responsible for chewing. Some individuals have larger masseter muscles due to genetics, constant chewing habits (like gum chewing) or medical conditions such as bruxism, which involves involuntary teeth grinding, especially at night. This constant muscle activity can cause the muscles to enlarge over time.
Treatment: Botulinum toxin (commonly known as Botox) can be injected into the masseter muscles to relax them. As the muscles relax, they gradually shrink, contributing to a more V-shaped facial appearance. The effects of Botox typically last for 3-6 months. With regular treatments, the effects can last longer over time.
2. Subcutaneous Fat Reduction
Subcutaneous fat can also contribute to a rounder face. Even individuals with slim body shapes may have “baby fat” on their faces.
Treatment: Lipolysis injections, also known as fat melting injections, can reduce subcutaneous fat. Phosphatidylcholine (PPC), a substance naturally found in the body, is used in these injections. When injected into the fat layer, PPC causes the fat cells to die naturally. After the procedure, patients might experience some swelling and redness, which typically go away in a few days. The full effect is usually visible within 1-2 weeks, recommended 4-6 sessions and the results are permanent if the patient maintains their weight.
3. Skin Tightening for Sagging Skin
As we age, bone resorption and loss of collagen can lead to the formation of jowls and sagging skin.
Treatment: Radiofrequency (RF) devices heat the collagen in the dermis layer of the skin, stimulating collagen production. This process tightens the skin and results in a more defined jawline, contributing to a V-shaped face. The results are gradual and natural, usually requiring 6-8 sessions. There are no activity restrictions post procedure.
